Being Bold with Color and Art
On a recent trip to London I was truly blown away by the vibrancy. Don and I were in London in 2008 and while I loved visiting this city filled with history, I was a little underwhelmed. Fast forward 15 years and in my eyes the city has come out of its’ cocoon! It is alive! One of the things that hit me the most was the art, the VIBRANT art! Color, texture and size. I kept finding myself stopping in my tracks to take photos of the walls alive with art. While most of these spaces are public - hotels and restaurants - there is no reason you cannot take cues to liven up your home.
If you want to add large, colorful art to your home it is really important to think about the walls you’ll be putting the art on. Color, wallpaper and moldings act as a back drop which accentuates the feel of the space and can play off the art in spectacular ways.
Stacked Art is one of my favorite things to do! I love how these still lifes come alive against the toile wallpaper. The art shows a depth and invites the eye to explore deeper. Art on art on art - be adventurous!
While I am moved by the “large” art pieces I am also a fan of the mini’s! Using mini art on a smaller wall or in a powder room is another way to share a special find or a meaningful piece. I found these little gems on Portobello Road in a beautiful little shop. They are Indian art reverse painted on the glass placed in vintage frames. I already have a spot in mind at home!
I am very fortunate that Don and I both appreciate art and he puts up with my non-minimal design style - more is more! We have pieces that were definite investment purchases and many more that are just fun, whimsical and add joy. Art is so individual and when you see something you love - go for it. It is just another area that will make your home unique, beautiful and YOURS!
