Market Report: It’s About the Details!

Happy November! I just returned from the Fall High Point Market and I am simply brimming with inspiration! After what seems like ages of gray interiors I am ecstatic to report that COLOR and details have made a comeback, they never left me, but social media and trends would have you believe the world was gray. Not so anymore! Additionally, over the last few years I have been less than inspired and at times downright bored with the retail market, nothing has felt “special” or interesting. My lifelong love of antiques has helped me survive this blahness but I’m feeling far more hopeful and excited after being at a market chock full of detailed pieces, unique finds and intricate creations. I’ve gathered a few snippets of what I saw at market to help you see what I saw. Boring be gone!

This sweet little side table is a great example!  Wood with cut outs and a cane top.  The mix of texture and design that just feels right!

Cane and rattan have been around a LONG time, but I’ve noticed that as I’ve visited the last few markets it is having a major moment and I am here for it! I especially love the new twists and creations that are coming from these elemental materials. Like this adorable chair, painted cane back and sides along with details on the  wood.  The perfect balance of texture, craftsmanship and simplicity!

Across the past few markets we have definitely seen a shift back to the traditional feel of design, I think this surge came about during and after the pandemic. Our homes have become our havens, offering safety and comfort. We desire spaces that nourish our senses and bring joy. Good design, richness of materials and thoughtful touches are all things that make you happy and bring comfort. The traditional elements and embellishments we saw on many upholstered furniture pieces and pillows creates a unique and special touch.

Patterned fabric on sofas and chairs - such a refresh!  And those tassels - swoon! Beautiful boullion fringes were all over market and I cannot wait to do this on a project in the works right now!

I love to add a welt to a pillow in a contrasting color or fabric for fun, but using a band trim to create a box edge on the pillows is taking it up a notch! And I love it! This is also a great way to add a little pattern to your room if you are not quite ready to put a pattern on the whole sofa or chair!

Ruffles, ruffles everywhere!  Now, I will say I love this little chair and a good ruffle, but I also realize that it might be too much for some. So maybe it’s not the main living room chair, but how about a little chair in your bedroom, a dressing room or even a child’s room? There is always a spot for a little feminine feel! Don’t deny the ruffles!

This little ottoman has a sweet ruffle. It’s not as big of a commitment as the chair. But it adds that touch of detail and finishing and it’s just alot of fun!

Last but not least - elaborate legs! This stool is perfect for any room, tucked in a corner, under a console or even add a small tray on top and use it as a drink table. You add a touch of craftsmanship in such a simple way and those curved legs almost feel like this little guy might just hop around the room in delight.

Market, to me, is like the fashion runway. You may not use or love all of what you see but the inspiration and ideas its sparks brings dimension to design projects for years to come.

What do you think? Would you add ruffles? Are you team tassels? A little whimsy is always fun and I am here to say that design is just that - FUN! It should bring joy, no one wants to live in a sterile, drab gray environment any more. Incorporating items items that make you and your family happy is always on trend.

And don’t forget, it really is all about the details!

Let’s Design for good,
Kim
