2022 Design Trends Report

You know I don’t like trends and it’s not because I’m stuck in my ways but rather I believe you don’t have to change who you are, what you already own or your innate aesthetic in order to have a stylish space. I also believe in the power of purpose over progress - your home needs to work FOR you and not just have the latest trends that don’t serve your lifestyle. I love to marry the new with the old, the trends with the traditional and help to curate a collected, vibrant, intuitive space that reflects you and your own personal taste. However, trends guide stores on what to buy so that means that when shopping for clients we are a little tied to them. And it is always fun to see what’s new and shifting - or in this case what’s come back around.

Here I’ve gathered a few small trends I’ve been noticing at markets and vendors and some easy ways to bring into your home - mixing the trends in with what you currently have may spice up your space and freshen just enough to feel updated without being so tied into a trend that you have ditch everything when the trend undoubtedly shifts again in a year.

  1. WALLPAPER - Wallpaper is still a major player and will be for some time. The patterns are whimsical, as well as serious, bold and calm, truly allowing you to use it in your own way. Powder rooms are my favorite to wallpaper and papering the backs of bookcases adds a layer of texture, but if you can muster the nerve a whole wallpapered room is life changing!

Not only the wallpaper, but this shows the mix of white and wood in furnishings found today. Spotted at High Point Market.

2. VINTAGE - You may have heard of the grandmillennial” movement in design - it’s a mixture of antiques, fabrics, old and new furnishings. It’s a bit nostalgic in nature and more traditionally inspired. Think needlepoint pillows, ceramics and chintz, yes, chintz is back. It includes more Victorian furniture, floral wallpapers and all things vintage. This trend is in direct reaction to the minimalist, mid-century trends that have been more popular recently using layers and layers of textures and pattern. Lampshades are a very fun, easy and inexpensive way to invite a trend into your home. Just think how this tasseled beauty would jazz up a little reading nook!

3. COLOR - Color, happily for me, is truly beginning to have a moment! Along with the grandmillienial movement we are starting to see a movement away from stark white, grays and neutrals of the past minimalist design trends. Inviting color into your space with pattern, texture and wallpaper can liven up your space and let light play differently than with neutrals. I love this image from a showroom in HighPoint that features these beautiful decorative pieces that would add an instant spirit booster in your home. Just one piece on a side table, or perhaps a grouping of three on small tables in a corner?

Color! Adding a fresh, color runner to a stairwell is a great way to incorporate the trend into your space. Stairwell part of the KMI “Traditional in Pink” Project.

4. BLACK AND WHITE - Black and White is coming on strong in a dramatic way that is blurring the lines between traditional and contemporary. Black is being used on window frames or trim and hardware because black can vibe with any other color and adds modernity. Green is also making a proud comeback. Green is a calming color and but when mixed with black and white it can be vibrant as seen in this kitchen.

The trend followers would have you believe that all that was is no longer but in reality what was will be again - hello chintz! It’s always fun to see what is new and ‘hot’ and to incorporate these things in small, thoughtful ways. Adding a new trend, be it a bright red vase to a grey walled living room or trimming a white window in black paint, can add energy to our lives and give us a fresh take on a treasured space. Are there any trends you’re excited to try? Or is there a trend you wish would fade? Let us know in the comments!
